  The Figure Submerged in Water

Marcos Beccari 15 (FILEminimizer).PNG

This course aims to present the watercolor techniques adopted by Marcos Beccari in his works. Aimed at beginner-intermediate artists, the course intends to enable students to use watercolor for the representation of the human figure. Participants will draw the picture from photographic references, except on the last day, when there will be a live model session.

Demonstrations and discussions about composition, values, lights and colors will accompany individual studies throughout the week. Participants can expect to leave with a good understanding of watercolor painting, focusing on the human figure.

  1. Color values: color as tonal key and chromatic contrasts.

  2. Color composition: theory of color applied to painting, color palettes, fusion x overlap.

  3. Sketching in watercolor: reduced palette and strategies of sketching in watercolor.

  4. Session with live model: activity with live model, under the guidance of the teacher.

Aimed at painters who already have experience painting the figure in watercolor, this course addresses specifically the distorting effect of the human body submerged in water. Initially, participants will develop studies from photographic references. Next, they will choose one of their studies to develop a large-format painting, following a teacher’s demonstration. This process implies an understanding of the different rhythms of water, as well as its transparency, reflections and distortions. Thus, the participants will be able to paint the various possibilities of interaction between the figure and the aquatic environment.

  1. Introduction: historical references and contemporary approaches.

  2. Water in watercolor: transparency and overlapping exercises.

  3. Figure-water composition: color studies and the distortions of the submerged figure.

  4. Demonstration and guidance of painting in large format.

These two workshops are designed so that if you want to you can take them back-to-back as a 6 day workshop.

The Studio

This workshop will take place in a large light-filled studio space in the center of Florence. The studio is located in our favorite Florentine Piazza; Santo Spirito, one of the city's loveliest and most lively neighborhoods.
