Jacob Dhein Art

This five day workshop will concentrate on the salient topics relating to painting the portrait and figure. Each day will start with Jacob doing a lecture and/or demonstration pertaining to relevant topics and skills in the various stages of a portrait or figure painting.

During the workshop participants will paint one portrait painting and one figure painting from observation giving them an opportunity to work through the principles covered in the workshop to give a greater understanding.

The main topics which will be covered during the workshop are: composition, warm vs cool source light, accurate drawing (proportions), value control (benefits of the 5 value system), edge control, the importance of proper temperature shifts, the use of value and colour to show depth, colour theory, simplifying shadow shapes, the use of various tools and techniques to achieve expressive effects, deconstruction/disrupted realism and wet into wet painting vs. wet on dry painting.

The Studio

This workshop will take place in a large light-filled studio space in the center of Florence. The studio is located in our favorite Florentine Piazza; Santo Spirito, one of the city's loveliest and most lively neighborhoods. Santo Spirito is the artisan center of Florence, located south of the river Arno in the Oltrarno district, it is full of bars, restaurants and boutique shops. Just a 5 minute walk from the Ponte Vecchio, all of Florence's main attractions are easily accessible.
