This 5 day workshop will focus on the fundamental principles essential to achieve a convincing three-dimensional representation of the human figure in oils. These principles will be analyzed in a logical sequence beginning with gesture and continuing through to the study of color and its effect on the figure and its environment.
Participants will establish the importance of prioritizing the use of structure and anatomy to accurately build a solid foundation and successfully orchestrate form and color relationships. These principles are analyzed through a series of exercises beginning with gesture and block-ins continuing through to a long pose with the opportunity to apply the principles practiced. Utilizing short poses offers the opportunity to rapidly prioritize the information necessary for each stage. Moving through to a longer pose provides the opportunity to methodically develop accurate proportion, structure, value range and form. The workshop is highlighted with demonstrations of these methods and concepts accompanied by question and answer sessions. The workshop format accommodates students of all levels who enjoy working from life.

The Studio
This workshop will take place in a large light-filled studio space in the center of Florence. The studio is located in our favorite Florentine Piazza; Santo Spirito, one of the city's loveliest and most lively neighborhoods. Santo Spirito is the artisan center of Florence, located south of the river Arno in the Oltrarno district, it is full of bars, restaurants and boutique shops. Just a 5 minute walk from the Ponte Vecchio, all of Florence's main attractions are easily accessible.

Stephen Early
Stephen Early is a classically trained figure and portrait painter from Philadelphia, who has received many awards for his work. Stephen has been a principal instructor of the core program at Nelson Shanks’s school 'Studio Incamminati' in Philadelphia, since it's inception in 2003. He has been an integral part of teaching and designing the Intensive and Advanced Painting Workshops at Studio Incamminati, Armory Arts Center Workshops in West Palm Beach, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts Workshop, and the New York Academy of Fine Arts Workshop.

WELCOME
We invite you to join us and Stephen for a welcome aperitivo near the studio on Sunday 3rd November, giving you the chance to familiarize yourself with the location and get to know each other. Classes will start on Monday 4th November and continue until Friday 8th November. Each painting day will last for roughly 6 hours. After class on the last day of the workshop we invite you to enjoy leaving drinks with us in the studio.
