Join us for an all-inclusive week of oil painting in the Tuscan countryside with Danny Ferland. Artists of all levels are welcome to join and learn to paint dynamic portraits from life in this intensive 5-day/6-night retreat. Danny will give a live painting demonstration on the first half day of the workshop, giving students direct access to his unique painting approach and the opportunity to watch every step of his process. Starting with an initial block-in of the head using vine charcoal, the drawing will then be sealed off with a burnt umber underpainting before progressing to the use of a full-colour palette. Students will then practice this approach themselves over the remainder of the course, completing two portrait paintings from life. Each student will receive a high level of individual attention and one-on-one critique from Danny, who will instruct his students on drawing, color mixing, and paint application in order to achieve a convincing likeness to the model. Be prepared to fully immerse yourself in painting for an entire week, and leave having learnt new and valuable artistic information.
During this all-inclusive art retreat, meals will be home-cooked and eaten together in our large dining room, or outside when the weather is nice. In the evenings particiapants will have free use of the grounds to explore, including the swimming pool, woodland, lake and olive groves. There is also a volleyball net, and a games room with table tennis and table football. During the week we will host some evening entertainment which everyone is welcome to join, such as a wine tour, cooking class, and pizza night!
This workshop will take place at Antico Borgo La Torre, a converted farmhouse and winery located in Chianti, 25km from Florence.
Originally a medieval tower, the structure dates back to the middle ages. Now an agriturismo, Antico Borgo La Torre produces it's own wine and olive oil. It is made up of 32 hectars of land, which include olive groves, vineyards, woodland, orchards, walnut trees, and a swimming pool.

Born in 1975 in Quebec City, Danny Ferland was self taught for many years before discovering the magnificence of figurative art during a European trip in 2002. In 2008 he moved to New York city after being accepted into the Janus Collaborative school of art. After months of dedication, he realized that his main interest lay in portraiture, one of the most complex and demanding forms of art. The balance of strong drawing skills and the sensitivity needed to produce an image with truth and soul is what drove him to pursue the art of portraiture. “I am trying to establish a subtle bridge between myself and the model, one that is built with trust and generosity. Moreover, this connection enables me to extract a beauty, a story and a spirit that is unique to every subject. If I can convey even a small part of this truth, I know that it will trigger a memory that is lost somewhere in the poetry of the human experience.”
