Workshop Description

Join us for an all-inclusive week of oil painting in the Tuscan countryside with Jacob Dhein. This workshop will concentrate on the salient topics related to painting the portrait and figure. Jacob will give lectures and demonstrations pertaining to relevant topics and skills in the various stages of a portrait or figure painting.

During the workshop, over five days, participants will paint one portrait painting and one figure painting from life giving them an opportunity to work through the principles covered in the workshop to give a greater understanding. The main topics which will be covered during the workshop are: composition, warm vs cool source light, accurate drawing (proportions), and value control (benefits of the 5 value system). We will also focus on edge control, the importance of proper temperature shifts, colour theory, simplifying shadow shapes, the use of various tools and techniques to achieve expressive effects, deconstruction/disrupted realism, as well as taking a look at wet into wet painting vs. wet on dry painting.

During this all-inclusive art workshop, meals will be home-cooked by our wonderful Chef Giovanna, and eaten together in our large dining room, or outside with a panoramic view of the stunning landscape. After class you'll have free use of the Villa and grounds to explore. During the week we will host some evening events; such as pizza night using our outdoor pizza oven, yoga and sound bath in the ball room, and a night of live music. Many of our evenings will be spent around the fire, under the stars. If you need to unwind after class you can use our sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. Or if you prefer to explore you can wander through the woodland, walk, cycle or take the bus into town. And of course you are always welcome to continue practicing your art, sketching outside, or continue painting in our studio, which is always open.

This is a chance to focus on you and your art, you'll be living and working together among many other creatives, and alongside Jacob, with the opportunity to dive deep into each other's knowledge and experience - building relationships, whilst making the most of the surrounding nature in this beautiful Tuscan setting. This is a place where you can learn from some of the world's most inspiring contemporary artists, without judgement or competition, surrounded by nature, so that your primary focus can be to learn and create, whilst enjoying your time on this planet.

Jacob Dhein Artist

Jacob Dhein

Jacob Dhein graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in Painting and Sculpture in 2006. He worked for several years after graduation, whilst continuing with his artwork, mainly focussing on portrait commissions. During this time he took workshops to enhance his skills with painters whose work he admired. In 2009, Jacob dedicated himself to painting full time. Upon reflection, he realized that there were missing elements in his artwork, which he needed to explore if he were ever to reach his goal of mastering the medium. He completed his Masters of Fine Arts at the Academy of Art University, San Francisco in 2013, and went on to teach there.

Jacob currently resides in Cádiz, Spain and focuses on painting a variety of subject matter and teaching workshops internationally. He is represented in various galleries around the world, and has done numerous solo shows.
