This workshop is open to all levels of artist who would like to learn a unique approach to figurative painting under the guidance of Michael Carson. During this workshop, Mike will demonstrate his process and approach with painting demonstrations each morning. The afternoons will be devoted to painting, with focus on painting the nude figure from life, and multi-figure painting using reference materials.
Mike will demonstrate his techniques to simplify the figure. He will discuss the balance between representational art and instinctive design decisions which can transform an academic figure study. Mike will also encourage you to better enhance and evolve your own personal style by remaining free to manipulate the painting as you envision it.
This workshop will take place in a large light-filled studio space in the center of Florence. The studio is located in our favorite Florentine Piazza; Santo Spirito, one of the city's loveliest and most lively neighborhoods. Santo Spirito is the artisan center of Florence, located south of the river Arno in the Oltrarno district, it is full of bars, restaurants and boutique shops. Just a 5 minute walk from the Ponte Vecchio, all of Florence's main attractions are easily accessible.

Mike Carson is a Minnesotan oil painter and sculptor, whose artwork can be found in private and corporate collections throughout the world. His aim is to use technique, mechanics, color and design to bring a fresh approach to the subject of the figure. "My work is first and foremost figurative studies. It's what I like to paint, my biggest challenge and my greatest payoff. My nondescript surroundings help me create a mood or a story that I am trying to relay through my painting. Inspiration comes from architectural interiors as well as fashion and my work allows me to explore this side of myself as well. I view a painting as a success when I take from it something new that follows me into my next work. It's just about learning to become a better painter."
