WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

This workshop is open to all levels of artists, who would like to learn a unique approach to portrait drawing. Participants will draw the portrait for various pose-lengths, from quick sketches to 4-hour long poses. ‘Portrait Drawing Express’ is the name of a charcoal drawing class designed by artist Zin Lim. The particular direction ‘express’ focuses on creating and delivering the portrait through a personal viewpoint. The workshop will cover different approaches to portrait drawing, design and composition.

Demonstrations and discussions on establishing interesting line quality, values, edges, and depth will accompany individual critiques throughout the week. The workshop is structured so that you will work for 3 hours with the model each morning, followed by lunch, then another 3 hours with the model in the afternoon. Participants can expect to leave with a strong understanding of the portrait, with focus on expression in figurative drawing. The goal of this workshop is to teach you the loose approach to expressive drawing, which you will be able to practice and build on after the teaching is complete.

This workshop will be made up of 5 days of drawing, the evening before the workshop starts we invite participants to join us and Zin for an aperitivo up on the terrace above the studio, this will give you the chance to familiarise yourself with the location and get to know eachother. During the week you can join us after class as we explore Florence, visit Piazzale Michelangelo and enjoy after-class aperitivi and dinners around the city!

THE STUDIO

This workshop will take place in a large light-filled studio space in the center of Florence. The studio is located in our favorite Florentine Piazza; Santo Spirito, one of the city's loveliest and most lively neighborhoods.

Santo Spirito is the artisan center of Florence, located south of the river Arno in the Oltrarno district, it is full of bars, restaurants and boutique shops. Just a 5 minute walk from the Ponte Vecchio, all of Florence's main attractions are easily accessible.
